Autumn brings with it not only a symphony of colors, but also an avalanche of fragrances from nature which, highlighted by the coolness of the season, bring us back to life after a hot summer. Just remember the amazing smell in our grandparents’ home every time an apple or pumpkin pie was being cooked in the stove or the aroma of fresh fruits drying on a sheet of paper in a chilly room. Bring those scents into your own home to celebrate fall by using simple DIY recipes we will detail below here. The natural fragrances will fill you with high spirits and optimism, while your home will radiate freshness.

We have chosen several easy recipes as seen on About.com and which, once put into practice, will fill your home with strong aromas that will last for days running. The ingredients are different, but they are all prepared in the same manner. For the first recipe you need 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 pieces of candied ginger and 1 clove of nutmeg.

The second combination is among 2 apple peels, 1 cinnamon stick and 3 whole cloves. For the third recipe you need 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 pieces of ginger, 1 tablespoon of pure almond extract and 1 tablespoon whole cloves. The fourth aromatic combination brings together 1 orange rind, 1 apple peel, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 whole clove and 2 star anise.

The fifth recipe requires 5 juniper berries, 4 small pine branches and 1 lemon peel and, finally, the sixth mixture calls for 5 bay leaves, 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary and 1 sliced lemon.

After you made up your mind which of the above recipes you want to use, bring a large stock pot of water to a boil, and turn down the heat and bring to a low simmer. Add your choice of fresh ingredients and spices to the pot. Any of the suggested recipes will release delightful home fragrances, but feel free to experiment with what you have in stock in your kitchen pantry.

Make sure to check the pot of simmering water every half an hour to make sure the pot does not run out of water. Add additional water to the pot as needed. The mixture can keep on the stove up to two days, but make turn off the heat prior to going to sleep. Apart from getting all the exotic smells, the simmering water will also help to humidify your home.
