The Off-Grid Tiny House – Small Means Comfort

It’s not only that this is a tiny house, but it’s also one fully autonomous energetically, an off-grid home, as they call it. It is the dream come true of a woman who wanted to live close to nature, without the burden of mortgages, in a small space, but fully functional. The off-grid tiny house is a new solid proof a small space doesn’t have to mean scarifying comfort and style, according to website Livingbiginatinyhouse.com which first documented this adobe.

The tiny home was created by former boat builder and current owner of tiny home company Room to Move, Jeff Hobbs, amid a growing trend among people of turning to small living spaces for a truly unique experience. Jeff designed the home for client Briar Hale. “It was important to me to live in a very wooden house with native woods that have been recycled, and to have a master craftsman do it and have something built that will last 100 years,” says Hale.

A functional floor plan allows for a surprisingly spacious layout. Storage cabinets are expertly hidden under the L-shaped sofa, and Hale installed shelves in the den, kitchen and bathroom for extra space. But we think the salvaged wood details really take center stage.

The tiny mobile home is entirely powered by a 600-watt solar array and a solar collector that heats the water supply. A rain water collecting system is also in place able to collect 32,000 liters of water per year. The home, which measures 6.7 meters in length and 3.2 meters in width, is built with 62-millimeter-thick structural insulated panels (SIPs), a material Hobbs prefers for tiny house building because of its thin and light profile, superior insulation, and rigidity. A covered veranda and timber deck expand the home’s living space to the outdoors. An outdoor utility cupboard located on one end of the structure contains the electrical unit with two 6-volt batteries, a washing machine, and the gas and plumbing units, according to Inhabitat.com.

The total cost of this small house, including equipment, materials and labor, amounts to about 77,000 USD.
