The American Institute of Architects made its choices concerning the best 2015 housing awards, selecting the winners out of hundreds of modern and innovative designs which are redefining the contemporary architecture. The winners were selected and divided into three categories – one/two family custom housing, multifamily housing and special housing, all featuring an ingenious combination of design and aesthetics and “open and recreational space, transportation options and features that contribute to livable communities” in an ever crowded urban environment. Below are the best 10 housing design of America.
The first winner in the one/two family custom housing is a house suggestively named “The Studhorse”. The house featuring several distinctive volumes with wide glazed walls was built in Winthrop, Washington.
The second winner in this category is the “bridge House” from Kent, Connecticut. Like the first example, the house pack wonderful living conditions in a modern design which perfectly integrates the natural environment.
The third project selected by the jury is the “Five Cottages” estate, traditional looking houses, but featuring modern elements of design, which make them a superb presence in the town of Marlboro, Vermont.
Finally, the last winner in this section is a house which seen from the distance seems to be a barn. Behind the grey façade lies a modern home, called “The Old Briar”, with several interconnected bodies, built in Tennessee.
The second category grouped the most modern multifamily living spaces, block of flats combining a contemporary design with functional aspects. Below are the three winners, the apartment buildings in San Francisco, Santa Monica and San Diego, all of them in the state of California.
In the last category, winners of the specialized housing category were judged on design and meeting the “unique needs” of those living in “disabled, residential rehabilitation programs, domestic violence shelters, and other special housing.” The first winning project is the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, an apartment building in Philadelphia and a social center in Washington DC.
