First of all, the types of grass differ from a climatic point of view. First of all, we have the warm season type grasses which are created to face prolonged sun exposure. These types of grass need full sunlight for at least eight hours per day and can stand drought and heat very well. Moreover, they need little water to survive. One of these types of grass is the Bahia grass, drought, insect and disease resistant. Other warm season type grasses are the Bermuda grass, the Buffalo grass and WaterLess grass. This last type is drought resistant thanks to the deep roots going 30 cm into the ground.
The grass species that makes most of these types’ composition is Festuca Arundinaceea. So, when buying grass seeds, in order to get the best drought tolerant type, make sure the content of Festuca Arundinaceea is between 40 and 60 per cent of the composition. The other species that are also part of these types are Lolium and Poa.
But there is one important aspect you should consider: the drought tolerance is at its height only when the grass has reached maturity and not after the seeds germinate. Consequently, during the first stage of the life the grass has to be watered and taken care of just like any other grass type. The resistance to drought is given by the deep and well developed roots of this grass species, running 30 cm into the ground. Only when the grass grows these deep roots one can say the law is drought tolerant.
